“Have you ever milked a cow, you ignorant fool?” was one farmer’s reaction to my speech regarding the introduction of assessing animal welfare on farm-level by an Austrian dairy company. This attitude describes a prevalent prejudice against science, for which reason I am very happy to do my PhD in a workgroup that is especially dedicated to applied science. In terms of content I am dealing with assessing and improving animal welfare in Austrian dairy farms.
After my studies of food sciences and technology I was working at a leading Austrian brand for organic foods, before I finished my studies on organic agriculture at BOKU University. During school and academic education I was able to gather practical agricultural experience, not only on my parent’s organic dairy farm. And in fact, I now and then had the chance to actually milk a cow.
